First Grade Curriculum

2023-24

Reading-  We follow  the “Wonders” Reading curriculum.  The children will be breaking into  groups as their reading levels are determined by AR (Accelerated Reader). We will continue to work on phonics, phonetic spelling, high frequency words, sentences building and writing prompts. The goal is for the children to feel comfortable and successful with the reading process. The children will use EPIC online library as well as the Amplify Reading program.

Mathematics

We use the “Sadlier Math” program. The children begin practicing addition skills using different techniques they can follow to determine their sums. Subtraction review and practice will follow. In technology, we will use the “Freckle Math” computer program. An assignment will be given to them to complete in Freckle that correlates with the concept we are learning that week.

Religion: We have returned to our old religion curriculum by Benzinger. We will use different activities from this curriculum. I will also provide arts/crafts opportunities and other resources. The children will learn all of the prayers said at Mass.

Learning Without Tears: This is a wonderful writing program used by many different schools, It teaches super easy letter formation techniques. This program also encourages proper pencil grip and neatness in the child's writing to promote neatness when printing.

Science

The Science curriculum we follow is through Houghton Mifflin Harcourt called “Fusion.” We will follow the curriculum using small experiments, individual hands-on activities to explore, and activity book assignments. The students will learn about classification of animals, the five senses, solid, liquid and gas and many more.

Social Studies

We follow the Pearson curriculum. The children will work in occasionally in their workbooks. We will also have different projects throughout the year for a different approach to Social Studies.  The children will learn about neighborhood and community, beginning government and after the holidays we will learn about all of the seven continents.

Technology

Students will have a chance  to work on the I-Pads daily. They will use QR codes to  scan into classlink. From there, the children will work on different educational apps that will develop skills  in math and reading. The children will be given a whole class assignment to complete before being permitted to work on self-paced activities.

Literacy:

The children will eventually head to the resource room across the hall for literacy class. There a lead teacher will read to the students, assign different activities on the i-pads or provide free-time to explore the library or do a project related to the story at hand.

Arts/Crafts

On Fridays, we will celebrate “Fun Friday” with a special project that correlates with what we are learning in language arts, social studies or STEM.
