Media Studies involves analysing and responding to a range of media texts. Students are also challenged to produce their own creative and convincing media products. We will study a range of units on film promotion, music videos, TV, Radio, advertising and more, as well having a chance to create and analyse the success of our own creations.
Through studying the media, students develop: appreciation and critical understanding of the media and its role in their daily lives; critical thinking and decision-making skills; pre-production and planning skills such as storyboarding, scripting, flat plans, news selection, mock-ups and sketching; production skills such as photography and editing, and an understanding of new technologies and evaluation skills. We encourage our students to critique the media saturated worlds we live in, equipping them with an academic toolkit of vocabulary and critical Media theory in order to do so.
This is an option best suited to students who are able to manage the challenging exam, worth 70%, but also enjoy the creative challenge of creating their own Media products for their Non Exam Assessment - worth 30%.
Assessment Objectives
Require students to: recall, select and communicate their knowledge and understanding of media products and the contexts in which they are produced and consumed, demonstrate research, planning and presentation skills, construct and evaluate their own products using creative and technical skills.
Topics Covered
Intro to Media, Advertising, Music Videos, Film Promotion, Radio, Magazine, News, TV, Online and Social Media and the Non Exam Assessment (30%).
What is Media?
Media is a contemporary and interactive subject which encourages students to develop their creative, analytical, research, and communication skills, through exploring a range of media forms and perspectives.
We will study and question the different types of media, messages and information we consume from television, to radio, to online platforms, to advertising throughout our daily lives. Students will learn to apply key theories to analyse how these messages are constructed and the meanings behind this.
Do I have to do coursework?
There is a Non-Exam Assessment worth 30% built into the course. This is an opportunity for students to create their own media texts. To be successful in this project, they will need to build on their knowledge and understanding of media and audiences.
What is the Media exam like?
Students will sit two 1 hour 30 minute exams, each is worth 35% towards their overall grade.
Our GCSE exams in Media Studies include questions that allow students to demonstrate their ability to:
recall information
draw together information from different areas of the specification
apply their knowledge and understanding in practical and theoretical contexts
analyse and compare how media products construct and communicate meaning and generate intended interpretations and responses
respond through discursive writing to show knowledge and understanding of media issues
use specialist subject specific terminology appropriately.
What subjects work well with Media?
Media suits students who like to be thoughtful and analytical - English, Ethics and Philosophy, Photography and IT.
What skills will I develop?
You will develop knowledge and understanding of the theory of Media and how ideas and information are constructed and given to an audience.
