PSHE relates to the planned learning opportunities a school provides in order to promote the personal and social development of its students. At The Roseland Academy, students experience PSHE through opportunities provided by the National Curriculum subjects, assemblies, the tutorial programme, guidance and support systems, special projects and other events that enrich students' experiences.
Staff are aware that schools play a key role in the personal and social development of their students. This is achieved through the ethos of the school, its curriculum and its provision for spiritual, moral and cultural development.
Schools are required to promote the personal and social development of their students. Section 1 of the Education Reform Act 1988 identifies that the curriculum should:
be balanced and broadly based;
promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of students at the school and in society;
prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
Students benefit from a wide range of resources, including:
Interactive and electronic resources
Video and DVD
Literature and case studies
Discussion
Role play
Group work
Drama performances
External speakers (such as Brook, Careers SW, Truro Foyer, YZUP, Addaction, Truro and St Austell Colleges, Invictus, St Petroc, Alcoholics Anonymous).
Our broad and balanced PSHE curriculum over Key Stages 3 and 4 includes all statutory and many non-statutory elements, including aspects of health, including Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) and substance education, first aid, diet and exercise, road safety and careers education and guidance. This is underpinned by our status as a Healthy School. Students are given the opportunity to explore the world of work, including work experience and future career and study options.
The curriculum will also contribute to the development of key skills such as communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
