uneteenth is the name of the oldest and most continuously celebrated African American holiday for which they received their freedom from slavery in the U.S. after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. The first Juneteenth took place the June 19, 1865 and was called "19th of June," by Black Texas freedmen (and women) because they were the recipients of freedom on that day in Galveston, Texas after Gen. Gordon Granger of the U.S. Army District of Texas read the decree that, "all slaves are free."
