Established in 1987, the building of the Trojan Horse has gone through multiple major reconstructions. The original building was constructed in the mid 1800s and was used as both a local grocery store and barber shop before being remodeled into Bloomington's National Bank. The current building of the Trojan Horse has architectural elements that date back to the mid-1880s. In fact, the city of Bloomington invested in restoring the structural brick wall component in hope of sustaining the distinctive part of the building. Overall, the local tavern has gone through numerous renovations to become the intimate restaurant it is today.
Denny Salter, a Bloomington native- founder and previous owner of the Trojan Horse, attended Indiana University from 1968 to 1971, and ultimately initiated his proprietor status and ability to begin his culinary ventures. Salter, began his career in cooking with a small locally owned Greek-based food parlor known as Zeus’s Gyros. Unfortunately, the small building burned down in 1987. Nonetheless, only six months later, Mr Salter purchased a worn down building, previously where the Brigantine restaurant was stationed at the time, and constructed a new Greek-based diner known today as the Trojan Horse. However, in 2017 Mr Salter sold the establishment to another Bloomington local, Kristan Shelley-who heavily bid on the deed of the restaurant after receiving a gift card to the Trojan Horse in a high school greek mythology class at Bloomington High school North.
