'Try this' challenge 1:

Elastic band guitar

You will need:

Quick:

  • An elastic band

  • Some fingers

  • An ear

Advanced:

  • More elastic bands - ideally of diffferent thicknesses

  • Small carboard box or tub

  • Something to record your musical efforts with - a mobile phone would work!

What to do:

Quick version:

  • Watch and follow the instructions in the video.

How many different sounds can you make?

Advanced version:

  • Use these instructions to make a more sophisticated guitar.

  • Can you make a guitar that will make more than 1 note?

  • Try changing the size of the hole in the box, the size of the box and/or the material the box is made of to see how this changes the sound produced - can you see any patterns?

Genius challenges:

  1. Investigate how a real guitar allows us to play even more notes then design and make your own improved version. Write an explaination of how to make your own even better version and how it works.

  2. Record a video of you playing a tune on your guitar.
