I am the middle school English teacher at the Lighthouse School in Coos Bay. I have received a fellowship this year with the Journalistic Learning Initiative, an Oregon-based nonprofit organization that supports students in developing media literacy and effective communication skills. 

This fellowship for English teachers throughout Oregon (map) is in partnership with the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. Over the past two months, I taught a course called Effective Communicators. The project introduces students to their local news publications, effective interaction with media sources, and has them experience the journalistic process of researching, interviewing, writing, and publishing on local topics that concern them.
