Wondering what to do after you leave sixth form/college?
University or college
UK higher education (HE) offers a diverse range of courses and qualifications, such as first degrees, Higher National Diplomas (HNDs), and foundation degrees. It includes any qualification at Level 4 and above. A BA or BSc (Hons) degree is a Level 6 qualification.
Most courses are taught in universities, but plenty are taught at colleges, and specialist course providers such as conservatoires, business schools, and agricultural colleges.
UK higher education is world-class – four of the top six universities in the world are in the UK. Over three quarters of research activity at UK universities is rated as world‑leading or internationally excellent.
You can study full-time or part-time. There are also distance and blended learning courses, as well as many accelerated degree programmes.

Higher apprenticeship
Entry level job
There are three main types of entry-level job available to school or college leavers:
Traineeships - these are best described as a short course (lasting up to six months) with work experience that prepares you for either an apprenticeship or work. While it's unpaid, you may be reimbursed for food and travel expenses.
Apprenticeships - they combine paid work with longer-term study that results in a formal qualification. If this is of interest, explore apprenticeships in greater detail.
Employer-designed school leaver programmes - incorporating paid work with training, these schemes will introduce you to the world of work, and result in a professional qualification.
