The European renaissance was a period of time in Europe that took place in the 15th and 16th centuries. During the renaissance; art, literature and the ideas from ancient Greece were rediscovered.
People all over Europe started to change the way they thought about themselves and the world around them. The renaissance began in Italy and then spread to other parts of Europe. During this time, many changes took place in people’s ideas and knowledge of the world.
There were incredible advances in art, literature, science and technology. These changes in Europe took place at the same time as the kingdom at Great Zimbabwe was at its height.
The changes that took place during the renaissance were a turning point in European history. These changes had an enormous impact on the rest of the world and on the African continent.

Though it was an incredible time of change and development, sadly the lives of women did not change much. Women did not have power in renaissance society. Though rich women had many more privileges than the poor, we would look at their lives now and feel deeply sorry for them.
As children, girls were given very little freedom by their parents.
As soon as girls became women, they were married off and placed under the authority of their husbands.
They were not allowed to marry who they chose. Marriages were arranged for the benefit of the family.
Women were not allowed to vote, had no political rights, and had very little access to education. Rich women were educated in the privacy of their homes but they were not allowed to go to school or universities.
