Now named MaskMakers, Sonia my boatmate and I started making masks in March from our home in Berkeley California. We wanted to help with the need for reusable masks for vulnerable populations and essential workers.
Masks that we make are within the regulations from WHO and are donated to various organizations that distribute to homeless shelters, Native Nations, farm workers, rehab residences, elderly facilities, hospitals, and schools. We have made over 5,000 masks so far.
As COVID-19 has progressed, the need for masks has increased. From our original goal of making fifty masks per week, we have increased our ability to make masks quickly. Now, we can make up to 300 masks a week. At an average rate of 250-300 masks per week, we are now making at least 1,000 masks a month.
We would love to partner with you, with your help, MaskMakers and WeCare will be able to continue donating to members in our community in need.
When COVID-19 first spread to the US, I was concerned very much for my grandparents living in a senior apartment. They and many of their friends weren’t able to obtain basic safety supplies.
Inspired by Stefani’s work in making masks, I started making face shields for family, friends and hospitals. When my grandparents first wore the face shields I made, they were very happy, and soon joined me in the efforts.
Now, as a family, we are working together on the production. We’ve donated face shields and masks to many hospitals and clinics in the Oakland area.
Our current goals are to donate to senior centers, nursing homes and grocery stores in the community, and appeal to more peers and families across the country to join this campaign to protect the vulnerable populations and stop the pandemic!
With the spread of the coronavirus still going strong, more and more medical workers will be in need of masks and other protective gear. At the Sutter Health Hospital in Oakland, California, (the hospital that this fundraiser would be supporting at this moment) there are nurses who wear hand-made cotton masks because of the lack of surgical ones. Using the donations that we have received, we were able to purchase 6000 surgical masks that have protected doctors, nurses, and technicians who work at Alta Bates from COVID-19. These brave clinicians and their teammates have relied on your donations to support our community. The guarantee of their safety and the safety of everyone served by Alta Bates would have been much harder without your generosity and trust.
I helped start WeCare because of the pressing need for masks and PPE in the Bay Area. I hope that this project will be a way of giving back to our greater community and showing that College Prep students do care and take action as well. I hope that WeCare can provide helpful sources for anyone to engage with our project and support our efforts!
