Inessa’s Exhibition

These works of art reflect my investigation of my preferred medium, as well as stylistic preferences in art. Generally, my art is more cartoon like rather than realistic, but I was able to draw/paint pieces that are realistic. This required a lot of focus to capture the details needed to make it realistic. I chose to group certain works together that had similarities in color, subject, and theme. For example, “SZA cosmopolitan”, and “Lil peep”, are pieces with music artists as the subject of the art. As well as this, “Garden revisited” and “Garden Fairy” both are majority green, as well as the common theme of gardens or nature. I chose “women experience” to be alone, due to the fact that it is more of an outlier in comparison to the other works of art included.

A general theme in my art is a textured background, which can be achieved with harsh strokes of a variety of colors. I like to do this, paired with a simple subject because it makes the subject more prominent, rather than blending in with a more simple background. In this exhibition, I use a variety of mediums and methods such as collaging, painting, and drawing. With painting, my go-to is acrylic paint, due to the fact that it can be applied smooth or textured. This gives me more range with each work of art. Acrylic paint can be mixed, so the color variety is practically endless. I have reconfirmed my beliefs, that paint is my preferred medium, with markers/pen as a close second.

I felt that this body of work culminated to be a reflection of my interests, as well as a reflection of my personality and ability in art. When I say that it reflects my ability, I mean the ability to try new things with art, as well as challenge myself. I feel like these works of art actually stemmed from my interest in challenging myself, rather than staying in my comfort zone. For the two pieces of work named “The Female Body Duo”, I took a lot of time to make precise marks as well as a general fade of colors to give it the thermal look. This isn't my typical quick art work, and took a couple of days. I believe they are an appreciation of the female body, as well as taking control of one's body, and pair nicely with my “A Woman's Experience” collage piece, due to the nature of how the media controls women.

I hope when viewing these art pieces together, people will question the general mood of each work, as well as how color plays into that. In addition, I hope viewers can spot small details that make the piece whole, or stand out.

“Garden Fairy”, COPIC Markers

20.3cm x 15.2 cm

The intention with “Garden Fairy” was to explore use of color and shading in and going out of my comfort zone by drawing a person.

“Garden revisited”, acrylic paint

20.3 x 27.9 cm

My intention with this piece, was to recreate an older painting of mine with a different color palette for the background, giving it more of a tranquil vibe.

“ A Woman’s Experience”, Collage piece

40.6 x 27.9 cm

With this piece, my intention was to depict what women face from day to day. With many beauty standards constantly telling people they aren’t good enough, to women being objectified in the media, I felt it was important to make the piece as chaotic as it is to deal with. I felt collaging was the best medium for this, because cutting and pasting real things from the media presented to us shows the reality of the situation.

“The Female Body Duo”, acrylic paint on canvas

25.4 x25.4 cm

These pieces are apart of a series I continue to explore, with he end goal of color exploration and paint control. Both paintings have a thermal filter effect to them, which takes precision with color mixing, in order to get the best variation of color.

“SZA cosmopolitan”, acrylic paint and collage

30.5 x 30.5 cm

With this piece, my intention was to explore simplicity when collaging, as well as mixing two mediums/methods (collage and acrylic paint). By doing so, I was able to create some texture, and a glossy effect to make the subject stand out more, as well as with the two colors in the background.

“Lil peep”, acrylic paint and COPIC markers

17.7 x 10.1 cm

With this piece, my intention was to try to explore more realistic features of people while drawing. Most of the characters and people I draw are not realistic, so this was to challenge myself.
