Mindfulness

Curatorial Rationale

These works are all reflect my investigation of myself. Over quarantine I have used the medium of art to reflect on my own mind, and as a result, have become more self aware than I have ever been. The pieces I chose to display in this exhibition are some of the key works that have helped me in this journey to mindfulness. I chose to group the first four works together (the series entitled, "the adventures of my conscience") because though I drew them all separately on different days, I utilized a character throughout all of them. This character is a girl with a striped dress and in the series she represents my conscience. I also grouped the last two pieces together (the series entitled, "im in my head again...") because they used the same design and concept, and each has significance so I chose to keep both as a pair. If I were to display these pieces in a gallery space, I would group the two series together to allow for more space for the individual works in order for their weight to be fully felt without distraction from the other works.I felt that in many ways this body of work originated with a need to express my thoughts and emotions, yet it culminated with a strengthening of my understanding of myself.

In these works I used a variety of mediums, but I mostly worked with pen and marker. These are both materials that I have worked a lot with, however, before this project, I only used them for mathematical designs and realistic drawings. In this exhibition, I was able to develop my technical ability in abstract work, using pen and marker to focus further on concepts rather than the more exact methods I was familiar with doing designs and realistic work. This has allowed me to more effectively use art as a form of self-reflection and self-expression, as a tool to explore my own mind and the internal world therein, rather than it just being a tool to explore the external world. As such, I also experimented with colors, exploring how to utilize pigments to communicate emotions instead of simply matching them to what I observe as I normally would do. In this way, I have been able to expand my skill and vision in art making, exiting my comfort zone and exploring the world of abstract art.
