Mr. Chan Kai left his estate to his foundation, The Chan Kai Foundation in the hopes of starting a legacy of giving after his passing. His grand-nephew Mr. Chan Kwok Wai became director of his foundation carefully guiding it through the years. Mr. Chan Kwok Wai created his own foundation in 2012 as a way of continuing the Chan family legacy of philanthropy in giving back to the Hong Kong community and to the world.
Since it's founding, these Chan family foundations have supported countless charities and organizations throughout Hong Kong, China and the world. The foundations helped create dozens of primary and secondary schools throughout China and Hong Kong. In addition to education, the foundations support the elderly, the advancement of young women and animal welfare.
Born in Hong Kong in 1936, Mr. Kwok Wai Chan spent his childhood years heavily influenced by the events of World War II and the lasting effects the war had on Hong Kong residents. In 1940 his family welcomed another son, Chan Kwok Lun into the family followed by the only daughter Chan Kwai Fun in 1949. During the early war years, his father, Mr. Chan Yat See started a pharmaceutical business in Hong Kong that eventually became Universal Pharmaceutical Laboratories Limited that provided pharmaceutical grade drugs to the Hong Kong government as well as private medical practices throughout Hong Kong. Mr. Chan became the Managing Director in 1981 when his father unexpectedly passed that year.
Universal Pharmaceutical Laboratories Limited continued under Mr. Chan's management until the early 2010s when Mr. Chan decided to retire from the pharmaceutical business and focus his attention on his other businesses and on philanthropy. Not one to completely retire, Mr. Chan continued as Managing Director of Pak Keung (Private) Limited, Lee Lung Company Limited, sole distributor of Hill's Pet Nutrition for Hong Kong and Skylite Limited, distributor of Frontline, Heartgard, Broadline and other nationally branded pet medicines until his unexpected passing in October 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2019.
The Chan Foundation, a registered 501(c) US private foundation was created by Winnie and Stephanie Chan as a way to perpetuate the spirit of philanthropy their family instilled in them throughout the years. Today, all three foundations, continue under the guidance of the 3rd generation of the Chan Family, Winnie & Stephanie Chan. Like their Grand Uncle Kai and their Uncle Wai before, they will continue their family's long legacy of giving.
