A massive welcome back to everyone across the schools and to our new pupils that have joined us and also to those in Nursery, a big hello to you all. It has been a really great half term seeing everyone coming back after the summer holiday feeling refreshed and really working hard in their lessons as well as embracing the our golden values in and around both schools and at playtimes and lunchtimes.
Please do read on below to find out more about the brilliant start from our pupils in the new school year.
Each week we expect the children across KS2 to complete at least 5 sessions of reading and to learn their spellings.
In addition to this we also set home learning on Spag.com and Maths.co.uk. The usernames and passwords for these platforms will be sent home. Once logged in your child will be able to access and complete any work that has been set for them. This is voluntary home learning and if the children complete it on a weekly basis they could earn Dojos.
Timestables Rockstars usernames and password will also be coming home. This does not have specific work set on it for children to complete but does have many activities, competitions and games that the children can access at any time and they can earn points on the platform for each activity completed.
Finally, we will also be sending home usernames and passwords for Spellingframe.co.uk this is a brilliant resource to help your child with their weekly spellings. They will be able to find their weekly spellings and then play a range of games and activities that will help them remember their spellings.
If you have any problems or you do not have your child’s username and password for one of the sites after this week, please inform your child’s class teacher and a username and password will be issued for you.
Reading
At Bedonwell we love to read and promote reading across the whole school. Reading with your child every day, even for a short period of time, supports them massively with their learning.
Your child will bring a book home every day that is matched to their reading ability. They can change their book whenever they finish it but we ask that a comment is written every time they read so that we know that they have read. For example, we are not expecting that a chapter book is completed in one evening!
We recommend that children read at least 5 times a week (including the weekend) and ask that this is recorded in their reading record every day. The class teacher will check this every day and will keep a list of children who read 5 times so that they can be rewarded with a Star Reader certificate on the Friday.
Number Bonds:
Learning number bonds help to improve mathematical recall and have a great impact on calculation skills. Please help your child to learn one number bond story at a time. As soon as your child is fluent and confident in that story, please return to school to be checked by an adult and moved onto the next story. Your child will receive a sticker in their card each time they complete a number bond story. Once all stories have been completed at bronze level, they will continue to complete silver and gold levels (these are explained on the back of the number bonds card).
Optional home learning:
English, Maths and Science activities will be available on Education City and further maths activities are available on Numbots.
You should have recieved your child's topic overview for the Autumn term. These show the foundation subjects that each year group cover and the units in those foundation subjects your child will cover throughout the Autum term. Please see the images below to see your child's topic overview. If you would like a copy of this please speak to your child's teacher.
Every week, children who follow our Golden Values in Bedonwell are chosen for the 'Always Award.' The children who receive the award have really impressed their class teacher by showing many or all of our seven Golden Values which are:
Manners, Respect, Teamwork, Stickability, Honesty, Kindness, Calmness.
They can be awarded the 'Always Award' four times throughout the year starting with the Bronze Always Award, then Silver Always Award, then Gold Aways Award and building up to the Platinum Always Award.
Check out some of the children who have achieved the awards below:
We hope everyone has been settling back well into school life this half term.
This week saw the first of our FOBS events, our Year 3 disco! Thank you to our parent helpers and staff who helped the evening run smoothly. We hope the children enjoyed their first junior disco!
We look forward to the Year 4 disco on the 19th November, the booking email will follow in due course.
Thank you to those that completed their Xmas4schools artwork. Once the designs have been uploaded, xmas4schools will contact you directly on your email provided on the form to purchase items.
Tickets for Firework's night are selling fast! If you wish to purchase some, you can click here:
https://www.pta-events.com/friendsofbedonwellschools/?event=event&eventId=84309 to do so. Please use one child’s name and class for every ticket purchased in your booking, and they will be delivered to that child in class before the event.
Uniform sales have been really popular this half term with £300 being raised, which goes directly back to our school. Thank you to those that have donated and purchased uniform. If you have any PE kit that your children have grown out of, or any school logo jumpers, donations would be greatly appreciated! Any spare underwear would also be gratefully received for those that may have accidents at school.
Stay and play will be changing to Tuesday afternoons, 1-3pm, after half term. Please feel free to bring along your little ones ages 0-4years. It is £2 per child and that includes a hot drink for the adult and snacks for the children.
We wish you all a restful break and look forward to seeing you at events next term!
FOBS Committee
Year 6 Boy's football takes place on a Friday at lunchtime. So far there has been a huge turnout for the club which is great, almost 20 of the boys have represented the school in football matches already this term!
The year 6 boys B-team played their first game against Belvedere Junior School. This was the qualifying game for the Xmas cup.
The boys played brilliantly in a difficult game and won the match 6-1. There were some fantastic performances throughout the team topped off by a brilliant hat trick from Kemal!
They now move on to the finals of the Xmas cup which will be in December. Well Done Boys!
Having won their qualifying games, Bedonwell went to Burnt Oak Junior School to face 7 other heat winners for the ESFA Boys 7’s football final.
Previously Bedonwell have never won the competition, but the team this year were determined to change the history books. In the group stage the team drew their first game 0-0 against Hurst, then went on to win their next two games against Dulverton Primary school (1-0) and Burnt Oak Junior School (2-0) which meant they went through to the semi-final as group winners, with 7 points.
They then played against Days Lane in a tough semi-final which finished 0-0 but the boys eventually prevailed in penalties winning 3-1 with some terrific penalties and penalty saves in the shootout!
In the final, the boys played extremely well against a good team and with 30 seconds to go of the match they scored to win the game 1-0 over the previous holders Danson Primary School.
The team played brilliantly throughout the whole tournament. The school are extremely proud of the team's conduct and teamwork they showed throughout the evening. The boys now go onto represent Bexley in the Kent finals in February.
Girls lunchtime football for years 5 and 6 has started this term. Every Thursday lunchtime girls in years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to train. This will hopefully lead to some of them being able to represent the school in matches against other schools. If you wish to take part please speak to Mr White.
Year 3 had their European day of Languages this term. The children were able to dress up in clothes that represented countries of Europe for the day. They then got to take part in 4 different activities that included flag making and dancing. The Year 3 children had a wonderful day and they all really enjoyed it!
A massive thank you to all the parents/carers and children that came to the book fair. It was a massive success and we almost completely sold out of books over the week. The school will receive a large amount of commission from the book fair company to invest in new books for our book corners and library.
In Nursery the children have been developing their fine motor skills to form hand writing patterns.
The children have been learning about their feelings such as happy, sad, calm and confused. They have been thinking about what happens to makes them feel this way and how we help our friends to be calm and happy.
Children have made their own 'Colourbubblies', named the colours and then matched light and dark cubes. For an extra challenge children made repeating patterns of two colours. They were very proud of their successes.

Pupils should at all times have suitable coats for outdoor wear, to cater for changeable weather.
Footwear must be plain black shoes or trainers.
Children wear their PE kit for the whole school day on the day of their PE lesson (you will be notified which day/s these are). This enables pupils not only to receive maximum learning time for their PE lessons, but also a reduces PE clothing being lost/misplaced.
PE kit expectations are:

Grey school jumper (plain- no branded clothing)
