At The Beacon Centre, we aim to infuse our young people with a sense of Self-Determinism, Confidence and Self-Esteem, empowering them to reach out for new opportunities and explore possibilities outside of their comfort zone.
As The Beacon Centre used a Curriculum model based on personalised provision based on the needs of the individual, our Careers Curriculum works in a stage format.
Young People will work on their key skills, those interpersonal skills that are vital to make a successful transition into the world of work. These skills include, behaviour in the workplace, team work and interpersonal development. Additionally at this stage, Young People will learn about making positive health and lifestyle choices, for instance learning about the dangers of alcohol and drug misuse.
This work is completed across tutor periods, Preparation for Adulthood lessons and PSHCE lessons. All Young People complete the Stage 1 aspects of the Careers Programme throughout their time at The Beacon Centre, even after they have transitioned to Stage 2 of the programme.
Young People begin to examine the range of skills that they either already possess or need to develop in order to access the world of work. Young People at Stage 2 are given the opportunity to access long term work placements, making meaningful contact with local employers and developing the skill sets that local employers are looking for.
At Stage 2 work within P4A lessons moves on from developing the interpersonal skills to developing essential employability skills such as critical thinking, professionalism and initiative.
These skills are developed through an ASDAN employability qualification, allowing the Young People make independent, self-deterministic choices about their future.
At the final Stage of Careers development, Young People are taught the most traditional Careers skills, CV writing, Cover Letter writing and Interview technique.
Young people are encouraged to a maintain their participation on long term work placements as well as being given access to work experience days & employer liaison contact opportunities, in order to broaden their understanding of local opportunities. This combined with Stages 1 and 2 gives Young People a well rounded, and detailed understanding of the local Job Market, allowing them to set achievable yet ambitious employment targets for themselves.
Stage 3 also allows the Young People at The Beacon Centre the opportunity to work more closely with the growing list of local community links, currently including Kier Construction, Nissan and South Shields FC.
