In Water by the Spoonful, Elliot, an Iraq veteran, and his cousin, Yaz, plan their beloved activist aunt's funeral together, honor her legacy, and find new life paths for themselves. Meanwhile, Elliot's mother, a recovering addict, finds hope and purpose moderating an addiction support chatroom. There, a found family help each other challenge and support each other to grow and find new sources of happiness. This play explores how people begin to heal their past damage and how they step up to support each other in times of need.

Audition Dates

General Audition Info

Auditions will consist of cold scene readings. You should review all the audition sides, as you may be asked to read any of them during your audition and you may not have time for further review at that point. Copies will be provided. If there is a side you would especially like to read, please note that on your audition form and we will try to accommodate your request.

Audition Materials: Character descriptions and audition information (including sides) are available in advance, linked below. If you have trouble accessing these files, please email auditions@theatreatfirst.org and we will send them to you.

Casting: All roles are open (none have been pre-cast). Theatre@First is committed to casting in identity-conscious ways. Most of the roles in this show call for actors of specific racial and/or ethnic backgrounds, and we will pursue authentic casting, so please do not audition for characters you are not eligible to play based on the racial descriptions listed. Gender and age are also specified for the characters, but actors do not need to match these characteristics. If you are unsure whether it is appropriate for you to audition for a particular role, please email auditions@theatreatfirst.org to ask.

In-person auditions are by reservation only. While we strongly prefer in-person auditions, we will accept video submissions for those who absolutely cannot make the in-person audition dates. Please fill out the Audition Form below to make an appointment or submit your video. If coming in-person, be prepared to stay for the full hour of your time slot. 

Performance dates are November 8-10 and November 14-16, 2024; we're also holding November 21-23 as a backup weekend in case one of the performance weekends is canceled due to illness. Actors must commit to being available this third weekend.

Audition Location: Unity Somerville, 6 William Street, Somerville – just up College Ave. from the Davis Square T stop.

The audition space is not wheelchair-accessible.

Parking on William St is by permit only. General parking is available on College Ave. Please read signs carefully to avoid ticketing.
