"ASCA 2023 was the first ASCA conference I attended, and I had a great time! I appreciated that the conference was cognizant about our mental health, and the work that we do and gave us some time to catch up on emails and take breaks. This meant that people could be more engaged during the sessions. Professionally I enjoyed listening to the keynote speakers and the concurrent sessions. Learning more about my colleagues made me want to get more involved with ASCA and I became the Region 4 co-chair for my region for this year."
"Exploring a foodie city was great, so many fun neighborhoods and great local spots for unique eats! I also could have spent a whole day in Powell's books...Reconnecting with colleagues in person was needed! Just being able to sit and chat and be a human not on a screen was so cathartic. Also the deliberate focus on restorative practices really motivated me and the team to reevaluate our code and the way we do the work...Not sure that I'll be doing the "red-eye" flight experience again. That was a bad life choice.
"Portland is an awesome town! Use the free transit pass as much as you can. Some colleagues and I were able to see so much of the town during our down time. We found an awesome food truck location about 15-20 minutes south of the convention center (it's in an old asylum location). We visited the Portland Aerial Tram and found a great dumpling place nearby. We went to a few bourbon tastings at distilleries around the city, and also found a tea tasting room (Smith Tea) that had tea flights! There is so much to see and do when not in sessions!"
"I went on the America's Hub waterfall tour on Friday afternoon of the conference and really loved every moment of it. The van was also full of ASCA members, so we had a lot to talk about. The van was clean, our driver was friendly and knowledgeable, and the tour was unforgettable. We went to at least 5 different stops and were able to get out to explore each falls for a few minutes. It never felt rushed. This was my first visit to the PNW and the waterfalls experience seemed like a good opportunity!"
"The first time attendee welcome session and opportunities created to know more about ASCA and network"

"Some colleagues and I went to lunch one day, and we realized there was another group of ASCA attendees in front of us. We were all looking for somewhere to eat, and eventually we just kinda of meshed together cause both groups were lost. We eventually found the Portland Food Hall and all spent the afternoon together. I found most of them again at the Advocate social and had a blast!"
"The tram was a HUGE blessing! It was convenient to be able to get from location to location. The long lunches were also great to have time to check out local places (and the BIPOC list of establishments was BOMB)"
"Best Coffee: Saint Simon Coffee Co.
Best Food: Abu Omar Gyros and Shawarma (Food Truck)
Best Experience in the City: Powell’s City of Books"
"I went on the Haunted Underground Shanghai Tunnels Tour with Old Town Pizza & Brewing!"
"me attempting to take a picture with a ghost (ha)"
"a photo of what appears to be an outline of a person (maybe?)"
"I enjoyed the networking social during the opening night. And the African American Male meetup."

"Going through the mentor program as a mentee was one of the best things I could've asked for as a first time attendee. I still stay in touch with my mentor and he has been a huge support to me as I navigated my first year as a professional in higher education. So much appreciation for Tom!!!"
"I appreciated the transit pass. It saved me a $40 Uber each way and also enabled me to explore Portland in free time...LOVE the case law and legislative updates."
"Someone that I met at the new attendee reception ended up being someone I connected with regularly during the conference, and continue to connect with since then."
