BP 00:
Virtual Community Existed Long before We Had a Pandemic
by Ken Follett
by Ken Follett
For more than twenty years I have been developing virtual community in historic preservation.
My next few articles will be spaced out over a series.
BP 01: Birth of Bullamanka-Pinheads
The first article will describe the birth and development of Bullamanka-Pinheads, a Listserv that began in October 1997 and remained active until September 2016.
The second article will comment on things that were learned while cultivating the virtual community that arose through Bullamanka-Pinheads. These are lessons that remain valid.
The third article will focus on the book Historic Preservation: Collective Memory and Historical Identity by the sociologist Diane L. Barthel-Bouchier, a reflection on my part twenty-four years after my initial reading. Reading this book on a long train ride initiated the original idea that led to creating Bullamanka-Pinheads.
A fourth article, if it comes together, will include comments from past correspondents of Bullamanka-Pinheads about the impact the experience has had for them in their lives and careers in historic preservation, or as Barthel-Bouchier might say, their perception of reality within the Preservation Project.
