SCRAP Lab
Conduct listening sessions and a development master plan for a new Sustainable Circular Reuse in Architectural Practice (SCRAP) Lab at the BAC to advance applied research that informs a new process for designing for “reuse first” within the profession. We will explore physical and digital space for applied research that will help promote, facilitate, and enhance the design and construction material reuse market, exploring multiple scales that can be replicated to seek broad global impact.
GO Digital
GO Digital represents the virtually driven online branch of our Gateway Office, connecting our projects, culture, and community remotely. This project is dedicated to developing a virtual studio that unites remote and on-campus members, with the goal of creating an experience that reflects the core values of GO and BAC.
Boston Building Resources Master Plan
Boston Building Resources (Reuse) is a building materials based organization in Roxbury, MA which inspires and educates homeowners and the design + construction industry on material reuse, environmental design and green materials. Continuing a multi-year project, our current session will focus on on two projects:
1) Creating a vision for BBR to act as an artisanal hub connecting the community around the artistic and creative impulses and efforts that exist in the neighborhood.
2) Master planning and design solutions for specific areas within the BBR Complex to create a rendered 3D model based on work previously completed.
Nepal Insulation Instruction Guide
In 2023, western Nepal experienced an earthquake that destroyed dwellings throughout remote underdeveloped areas. The government issued temporary shelters using locally available scrap materials, but they lacked insulation which proved life-threateningly dangerous given extreme winter col, especially to vulnerable populations.
Our partner, a local architect, leveraged his expertise to develop a low cost insulation system that can be hand-made and installed from readily available agricultural materials. In Spring 2024, Gateway Office launched a partnership to create a practical illustrated fabrication and installation guide for this insulation system. In Fall 2024, we will focus on refining this illustrated guide, with opportunities to create original graphics and interface directly with the client.
