Probability and Statistics

In this unit students will have the opportunity to learn about probability and statistics and how we use these skills in our daily lives. Probability and statistics is a topic that is generally not covered until middle school. Our third grade G.A.T.E. students will learn the basics of this topic through practice, experimentation, and computer programs.

Standards-Based Learning

Examples of some of the standards we will be focusing on within this unit are listed below. Many are Sixth Grade standards, as that is when Common Core begins to cover the topic. We will be working on these standards in an age-and ability appropriate fashion.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.SP.A.1 -- Recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to the question and accounts for it in the answers. (For example, "How old am I?" is not a statistical question, but "How old are the students in my school?" is a statistical question because one anticipates variability in students' ages.)

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.SP.A.1 -- Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a population by examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a population from a sample are valid only if the sample is representative of that population. Understand that random sampling tends to produce representative samples and support valid inferences.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.SP.C.6 -- Approximate the probability of a chance event by collecting data on the chance process that produces it and observing its long-run relative frequency, and predict the approximate relative frequency given the probability. For example, when rolling a number cube 600 times, predict that a 3 or 6 would be rolled roughly 200 times, but probably not exactly 200 times.

3-5-ETS1-3 -- Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 -- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 -- Model with mathematics.
