Integrating SEL into Montessori Practice: Strategies for Intentionality
Theresa Powers is in her seventh year at The Montessori School of San Antonio and holds a Montessori administrative credential from the Montessori Center of Houston. She has over 30 years of experience as an educator and school leader.
This presentation explores the natural overlap between Montessori education and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), highlighting how both approaches cultivate independence, empathy, collaboration, and self-awareness in children. Participants will gain a clear understanding of what SEL truly encompasses—its core competencies of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making—and how these competencies align with Montessori’s respect for the whole child. Theresa will share her school’s journey of developing and implementing an intentional SEL program: from foundational steps and pilot practices to a fully integrated, school-wide approach. Through reflection and examples, attendees will see how SEL practices have supported students’ growth, strengthened classroom communities, and provided teachers with language and tools for scaffolding social-emotional skills. Finally, we will explore practical ways to be more intentional with SEL—moving beyond implicit growth opportunities to explicit, thoughtful integration in daily routines, classroom structures, and community partnerships. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to strengthen children’s social-emotional development while staying grounded in Montessori philosophy.
