Team GABA is an interdisciplinary undergraduate research team in the Gemstone Honors program at the University of Maryland, College Park. We are composed of people from different academic backgrounds, united by a common goal: to explore how ACES and stress affect gastrointestinal health.
Our research aims to explore the intricate relationship between school-related stress, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and gastrointestinal (GI) issues in college students. College is a time of intense academic pressure, social adjustment, and increased responsibilities, which often lead to heightened levels of stress. We aim to understand how these stressors, combined with a history of childhood adversity, contribute to the frequency and severity of GI problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), indigestion, and other digestive disorders.
How does Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and academic stress impact gastrointestinal issues (GI) among college students?
Are GI issues associated with academic performance?
We aim to identify the impact of stress on gut health
We want to determine how the number and type of extracurricular activities affect GI health, whether they alleviate stress-related GI issues or make them worse.
We want to be able to identify and pinpoint specific foods and dietary patterns that worsen GI symptoms and increase stress, as well as those that promote gut health, reduce inflammation, and help students manage stress more effectively.
We hope to design practical recommendations and interventions that support students who are at higher risk of GI issues due to stress and ACEs.
