Jennifer St Sume is a first year PhD student in Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, College Park focusing on race and American politics. Specifically, her research approaches American "citizenship" as a summative construct of United States policy and questions how black Americans deliberate and define this citizenship within their own community. She then question whether this group definition of citizenship impacts the voting behavior and patterns of the black voters. Jennifer spends her other time working locally as an activist and organizer focusing on issues related to race and gender equality and criminal justice reform. Jennifer received her B.A. in Communication from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL where she graduated a Presidential Scholar. She also received an M.A. in Communication from Wake Forest University where she focused on race and presidential rhetoric. A daughter of Haitian immigrants and native of south Florida, she enjoys karaoke by the beach, Publix chicken tender subs, and cool craft beers.
