Due to the high adaptability that this breed possesses and the long rich history of the Katahdin sheep breed in Missouri, we believe that this breed would thrive in the various climates of Salem, Missouri. Furthermore, due to their natural resistance to internal parasites, the need for frequent deworming will be reduced especially in areas like Missouri where the humidity and moisture levels can contribute to increased parasite infections. Another great benefit to this breed is their relatively low maintenance coupled with their high-quality meat production. Since Katahdins thrive on pasture-based diets, this reduces the need for year-round intensive management practices ultimately reducing the amount of input costs. Finally, Katahdin ewes are known for their strong maternal instincts and great mothering abilities. When combined with multiple births and a high attentiveness to their lambs, lamb survival rates are increased. Unfortunately, Katahdins are heavily sought after, meaning the market demand and competition often drive the price for them up. Furthermore, one must keep in mind that an extensive flock needs to have protection against predators in Salem. Fortunately, predator-proof fencing, guardian animals, and sound or visual deterrents have proved effective and are relatively cheap options. Ultimately, the benefits of raising the Katahdin breed in Missouri outweigh most of the negatives and will allow us to raise and manage a successful meat production flock.
