The topic of space has always been fascinating to me. The wonders of what could possibly be out there, the burning desire to learn more, and the innate human curiosity as to its history and mechanisms all keep me very interested. If I ever have a moment alone at night, often I will look up at the sky in bewilderment. One of my biggest dreams in life is to see the discovery of some otherworldly life. Space is very close to my heart, and I would love to create something exploring potential answers to the questions I always have: What kind of other lifeforms are out there? How do all these massive astronomical structures form and interact? What would it feel like to actually go up there?
The topic is also very important for everyone to be educated about because it is the next phase in human evolution. Earth will have to face many challenges in the near future, including climate change, overpopulation, and the depletion of natural resources. Current predictions say that our planet’s temperature is likely to rise by at least 1-2°C during the current century, causing massive devastation to our oceans, land, and atmosphere. This coincides with our rapidly growing population, which is estimated to reach around 10 billion by the 2080s. Soon, it will not be possible to sustain ourselves with just Earth’s resources anymore, and the only place to go is up. Colonies on space stations or other planets are very likely to happen within our lifetimes, so it is imperative that everyone starts becoming familiar with the potential dangers and wonders of space.
Space holds the potential for many avenues of creativity because of the wide variety of celestial bodies that exist and the themes which can be explored in the unique environment. All sorts of media has already been created with the theme of space in mind, from movies and TV shows like Star Wars and Star Trek, to games like Outer Wilds and Kerbal Space Program, to even an entire genre of art dedicated to exploring the ideas associated with space. The creators involved with the topic are as diverse as the planets in our solar system, ranging from the governmental agency of NASA, to the passionate individuals of the International Association of Astronomical Artists, to even me in my 8th grade science class (my model solar system was the best in the class). Even though there are so many people exploring this topic, there are new discoveries and theories being made each day which can fuel even more projects and works.
