High School Band

(9-12)

Welcome high school band students/parents!

Here you will find a variety of helpful resources, a calendar, a daily/weekly schedule, and the objectives for high school bands (9-12). I am so excited for another year with the high school students and I look forward to making music with you all!

Instruments--

Students will be given a school instrument at the beginning of the year to use for performances and at home practice. We will learn how to care for them and maintain them, but students are expected to be respectful to the school's property; the instruments are a privilege! Students are expected to take their instruments home to practice and only a select few students will be given an at-home instrument (usually larger instruments that are not easily moved). I encourage all parents to help their children remember to practice, even if by just asking them to open their case. Work with your child to set up a time where their practicing won't bother anyone and help them stick to their schedule. I thank you for your help!

Supplies--

Students need to come to each class with the following (all are supplied at the beginning of the year but are given to the student until the end of the year):

Method book

Instrument (in good working condition) - percussionists need their drumsticks

Pencil

Reeds/grease (at least 2 working reeds)

High School band objectives

high school band students will learn, with increasing difficulty, how to

identify and define the meaning of symbols found in a musical score

identify musical elements and use appropriate vocabulary to discuss their use, including melody, rhythm, tonality, form, tone color, texture, pitch, tempo, dynamics, and phrasing

demonstrate a physical response to written or aural music through performance

demonstrate musical literacy through reading, sight reading, and notating music

perform with expression, technical accuracy, and stylistic integrity a varied repertoire of instrumental literature

perform in chamber settings and respond appropriately to other ensemble members' musical cues

perform in large ensembles and respond appropriately to the conductor's patterns, gestures, and cues. Including school performances, district festivals when eligible

recognize and practice audience or performer behavior appropriate for the context and style of music performed

compare the characteristics of two or more styles of music

examine a musician/composer or period in music history and present a project independently

recognize the use of musical elements in familiar and unfamiliar songs

identify criteria for evaluating a musical composition, arrangement, improvisation, or performance by comparing it to an exemplary performance or musical work

examine one's own musical performance using evaluation criteria

use appropriate terms to explain preferences for musical works and styles

discuss how the subject matter learned in other disciplines is interrelated with and/or connected to music

examine a music-related career and present a project that represents that career

identify and make connections between music and concepts from other content areas

Extra-Curricular Band Opportunities

All-State Band - November 10-15 - students can audition for the Wyoming All-State Band. This audition process is difficult but worth it as you get to play with the top performing students within the whole state of Wyoming. It is a multiple day trip and will take place January 18-20 in Cody. Click here for more detailed information
Honor Band - November 21 & 22 @ NWC - students can be nominated by their band director to attend honor band and perform a variety of music with a larger ensemble composed of students from around the big horn basin. Will take place around the third week of November
Contest - April 21 & 22 @ Northwest College Nelson performing Arts Center - Students can sign up to perform at the Contest where they will prepare a solo or small ensemble piece and perform it live in front of a judge to receive feedback on their performance. The first day will consist of our entire band preparing a group performance piece for judge feedback. ALL ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND FOR THE BAND PORTION!

Band Handbook

Every member of each band (5-12) must read, sign, and return a copy of the band handbook to Mrs. Kienzle at the end of the first full week of school. It is attached here for reference if the paper copy is misplaced. Handing in the last page with a signature is there first grade...an easy A!
