"Many people have depression, and depression can even kill people."
-Mr. Vagnone, Science teacher
March 10th: Started this project
March 11th: Set the topic
By knowing that more people than I thought were suffering from depression due to the pandemic, I have set my topic as the relationship between the pandemic and depression.
March 14th: Made the structure (Outline)
I have made the basic structure for the TED-style talk. At first, it was only about depression, and I added the content about the relationship between the pandemic. Because I don't know that much vocabulary, it was a little hard to put information in my own words.
March 18th: Collected sources
I needed to find the chart about the rate of depression. I also had to find about the rate of the depression's reasons like unemployment. Because most of the charts were hard to be recognized or had too much information, it was a bit hard to find the chart.
To show what depression is, I had to find the image of someone who is crying or lowering one's head. To find the image, I searched about it to Google and Unsplash. While finding it, I found a better one, which a boy is been fragmented due to depression.
March 19th: The interview
Making the questions
I made questions about depression, like "What is the principle of the diagnosis?", and about the personal thoughts, such as "How do you think about depression?", and "Do you think if you can defeat depression?" I think that my best question is "How do you think about depression", because I could listen how the expert thinks about depression.
Finding someone to interview
Because my science teacher, Mr.Vagnone's major was psychology, I requested him for my interview. When he said yes to the interview, I felt relief and appreciation.
Feeling after interviewing
After interviewing, I felt that depression happens in a larger place than I thought. I also felt appreciation to Mr.Vagnone for saying yes to my interview.
March 24th: Ted talk
I initially thought to present about depression. But, after making the structure, I felt it wasn't interesting, and just listing the normal information about depression. So, I changed the heart of my presentation to the relationship between the pandemic and depression, which is more interesting.
Because I made a lot of big changes while writing the script, it was my biggest challenge of creating the talk. Also, while preparing for the presentation, I thought it will be good if I had a card to show the charts or the image. Because my drawing skill is poor, it was very challenging, too.
If Depression is not treated, it can ruin one's life. For instance, Buzz Aldrin, who went to the moon, told The New York Times that his depression ruined his family. He is now the chairman of the National Mental Health Association.
Unemployment is one of the primary reasons for depression. In the Great Recession, almost 10% of the people are unemployed. Now, the unemployment rate is almost 15%, way higher than the Great Recession. It would impact people's emotions, and make more people get depression.[*Depressive disorder]
The depression rate is now about 5 times as much as before the pandemic. If we don't think and care about the disease, the rate will increase even more! To prevent it, we have to think and pay attention to depression.
This is a video about depression and the relationship between the pandemic and depression.
"We need love and to support other people. If everybody were to care for each other in the same way that they would care about their families, then depression rates would go down significantly."
-Mr.Vagnone, Science teacher
By researching about depression and the relationship, I learned that depression is happening more widely than I thought. I also learned that the pandemic has impacted us a lot. By doing this project, I improved my research and presentation skills. When I look back on this in the future, I think I will remember making the card for the presentation. It is my first time using it, and I think I will use it also in the future because I felt it made the audience easier to understand what I am talking about.
