Meet the Team (May 2025)
Professor Daniel K. Kim, principal investigator
Daniel grew up local to Philadelphia in Horsham, Pennsylvania. He earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry at Gettysburg College working with Professor Timothy Funk on Pd- and Fe-catalyzed oxidation reactions. In graduate school he gained valuable research experience with Professor Vy Dong working on Rh- and Co-catalyzed hydroacylation reactions at the University of California, Irvine. Daniel moved back across the country to join Professor Dave MacMillan at Princeton University as a postdoctoral research fellow working on photoredox-catalyzed bioconjugation reactions. He joined Temple's Research Faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2020 where he will start a research program on developing novel modes of catalysis towards new applications in organic synthesis and techniques in chemical biology.
Salina Zhang, undergraduate researcher
Salina Zhang grew up around Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated from Central High School in 2024. She is currently an undergraduate majoring in Biochemistry at Temple University in the College of Science and Technology expecting to graduate in 2028. Outside of the lab, she enjoys playing badminton, hanging out with friends, watching murder mystery TV shows, and trying out new baking recipes.

Dylan Tomaselli, second-year graduate student
Dylan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania but spent most of his school life in Haddon Township, New Jersey. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson University – East Falls in 2024 with a B.S. in Chemistry. At Jefferson, Dylan conducted research under the guidance of Dr. Marlena P. Washington working on the synthesis of phosphorous containing organic polymers with applications in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Outside of lab, he enjoys stand-up comedy, music, cooking and playing video games.

Ryan Kashatus, third-year graduate student
Ryan grew up near Philadelphia in Lancaster, PA. In 2023, he earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, where he worked under Dr. Elizabeth Young on the synthesis and photophysical properties of indole based azo dyes. Outside of lab, he enjoys cooking, writing music, playing guitar, gaming, and watching basketball.

Jabez Thullaprambil, fourth-year graduate student
Jabez grew up in Pune, India. He obtained his MS in chemistry from Savitribai Phule Pune University. During this time, Dr. Vasant Chabukswar supervised him working on metal-catalyzed indole functionalization. He also worked as a QC chemist at a Materials Research Lab. Outside the lab, he enjoys playing guitar, piano, and reading.

Justin Chang, fifth-year graduate student
Justin Chang is from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. He earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Maryland. During his four years there, he worked under Dr. Natasha Andrade researching natural biosorbents for heavy metal removal in aqueous solutions. An interesting fact about him is that he was an officer for the national professional chemistry fraternity, Alpha Chi Sigma. Outside of lab, he enjoys cooking, reading, and playing video games.

Kyra Samony, fifth-year graduate student
Kyra grew up local to Philadelphia in Gilbertsville, PA. She earned her B.S. in Chemistry from Dickinson College, which is in Carlisle, PA. During her time at Dickinson, she worked under both Dr. David Crouch, on the selective reduction of benzonitrilic compounds, and Dr. Jason Gavenonis, on the synthesis of fluorescent bifunctional probes for intracellular reaction monitoring. She also interned at MaxPower, Inc., a local R&D facility focusing on the development of special purpose lithium-ion batteries. Outside the lab, she enjoys spending time with Lily, her French Bulldog, painting, and tending to her many indoor and outdoor plants.

Rifat Nabi, fifth-year graduate student
Rifat was born and raised right outside of Philadelphia in Lansdale, PA. He didn't travel too far and completed his B.S. in Biochemistry at Temple University. As an undergraduate, he performed research under Professor Ross Wang developing small molecule/peptide-based probes to further understand post-translational modifications in disease pathways. An interesting fact about him is that he has participated in a homestay program, in Japan! Outside of the lab, Rifat enjoys reading Stoicism, working out, and shopping at Trader Joe's.
