Singapore Junior Biology Olympiad
The Singapore Junior Biology Olympiad (SJBO) is organised by The Singapore Institute of Biology in collaboration with Science Centre Singapore, and supported by the Ministry of Education.
Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad
The Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad (SJChO) is a competition organised by the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC) in partnership with NUS, NTU and SUTD, and supported by the Ministry of Education.
Singapore Junior Physics Olympiad
The Singapore Junior Physics Olympiad (SJPO) is organised by the Institute of Physics, Singapore (IPS) with support from the Ministry of Education.
All IP3 and IP4 students are eligible to participate in the competitions. A merit-based selection test will be conducted after registration. Students are encouraged to engage in self-directed learning and resources are available on this site. The competition comprises a theory round for all students, followed by a practical round for the top 7 schools.
Theory Round (Online): Multiple choice, true-false and short answer questions.
Date : To be confirmed
Venue : Online (in School)
Practical Round: Top 4 students from each of the Top 7 schools.
Date : To be confirmed
All results from the competition will be posted online here.
There are 2 rounds of the competition:
Round 1 (Online Theory): 2-hours theory paper comprising Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ). All students who registered for the competition will sit for Round 1 via an online platform, ClassMarker.
Date : To be confirmed
Venue : Online (in School)
Participants will be given 50 MCQs. For each question, there are four possible answers, A, B, C, D. Choose the one answer that you consider to be the best. Marks will be awarded for every correct answer. No marks will be awarded for incorrect answers, or any unattempt question. Each student will log in to the online platform, ClassMarker, with a unique username and password provided by their teachers.
Round 2 (Online practical) : The top-scoring students (typically up to 20%) from Round 1 will be selected to compete in Round 2.
Students will watch a series of experiment videos and answer the questions according to the videos in the online platform, ClassMarker. Students with special needs (e.g. colour blindness) must inform the secretariat in advance.
Date : To be confirmed
Venue : Online (in School)
There will be an Awards ceremony to congratulate the Gold, Silver and Bronze winners. More details will be released.
There will still be two rounds, but all participants will now be involved in both rounds.
First Round: SJPO (Individual Round)
Date : To be confirmed
Time : To be confirmed
Venue : Respective schools, with invigilation.
Format : Closed-book; Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) on online platform using devices provided by students/schools.
Remarks : Participants are to login during a trial session to agree to the Rules and Regulations, as well as to familiarise themselves with the ClassMarker platform. Some penalty for incorrect responses will be imposed to discourage arbitrary guessing. Participants will only need to login to the trial session for about 10 minutes at their convenience.
Second round: SJPO (Team Round) that is also known as the Singapore Physics League (SPhL). All participants need to form their own teams of 3 to 5 participants. Students need to form teams before registering.
Date : To be confirmed
Time : To be confirmed
Venue : Online, no invigilation but participants are only allowed to communicate within their own team of 3-5.
Format : Open book; numerical answers submitted on custom-built online platform [ https://sgphysicsleague.org/ ] are auto-marked with multiple attempts allowed
Remarks : Participants are to login to agree to the Rules and Regulations, as well as to familiarise themselves with the platform. To avoid communication between teams, no more than one team should share a venue – schools do not need to provide venues. Scores are tracked on a live leader board.
Rules and Regulations of SJPO
1. Eligibility
Participants must be secondary school students in the year of the competition.
Participants have to form their own teams before registering through their schools.
Registration is through the schools only. The Principal of the respective school must grant approval for participation.
Participating schools are responsible for ensuring that all participants are students of the school, and for coordinating registration, payment and invigilation for all participants from the school.
2. Rules
For the SJPO (Individual Round), the syllabus follows the SJPO (Individual Round) syllabus. Only non-programmable scientific calculators are allowed (graphing calculators cannot be used). The use of all other electronic devices during the test, such as mobile phones, pagers, PDAs, smart watches, etc. is also strictly prohibited.
For the SJPO (Team Round), the competition is “open-book” and follows the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) syllabus. Participants in the same team should communicate and coordinate with one another, but communications outside the team (e.g. requesting or sharing hints or answers) are strictly disallowed. Schools are not required to provide venues for participants. Please ensure that students refer to the website [ https://sgphysicsleague.org/ ] for detailed instructions before registering through the school.
Awards for SJPO (Individual contest) and SJPO (Team contest) are determined independently. A participant’s team award for SPhL (Junior) will not affect their individual award for SJPO (Individual), and vice versa.
