TIPS4Math

Grade 9 Applied

Welcome

Visit the Getting Started page to prepare for this session.

This session is setup to be self-paced.

Text that is underlined, links to resources for you to use in the session.

We invite you to share your thinking throughout and we invite you to return to those parts to reflect and add comments to others.

Use the Parking Lot to pose wonderings, and questions.

As facilitators, we will be monitoring and providing you responses/feedback.

Learning Focus:

  • become aware of the TIPS4Math resource
  • explore the blended learning units for grade 9 applied
  • make links to other mathematics resources that can be used to differentiate instruction

Use of Technology in the Classroom

Use of technology in the classroom

The amount of digital classroom learning may depend on a number of factors -- including teachers' and students' access to and comfort with technology.

We invite you to place into the google doc ways in which you have or ways in which you may use the technology given any one of these three situations.

a) 1 device for the whole class

b) 1 device per group

c) 1 device per student

Listen to how some teachers are using the technology in the classroom

What is TIPS4Math?

What_is_TIPS4Math_slides.pptx

This resource was created to support educators with planning their mathematics program. It offers a possible way of sequencing the learning. It also identifies key resources to support the learning such as the grade 9 applied blended learning activities. The TIPS4Math resources are available on EduGAINS.

Spend some time reading through and getting familiar with the following Grade 9 Applied TIPS4Math resources:

  • Course Overview
  • Unit Overviews with Lesson Overviews
  • Teacher Notes

This overview, originally from TIPS4RM, has been repurposed with TIPS4Math. The grade 9 applied blended learning activities are organized using this structure. The first part of the overview shows the eight units with the strands and the key topics addressed throughout the course.

Grade 9 Applied Course Overview slide 1 of 3.pptx
Grade 9 Applied Course Overview slide 2 of 3.pptx

The second part of the Course Overview identifies the name of each unit with its overall expectations and the approximate number of days of instruction. Know that this is only an approximate and it may vary based on the needs of the students.

Grade 9 Applied Course Overview slide 3 of 3.pptx

In this session, we take a closer look at the Solving Equations Unit.

Unit Overview Sample: Solving Equations

This unit overview identifies the Overall and Specific Expectations as well as the names of the lessons for this unit. The codes for the expectation have been included so that it can be easily referenced from the lessons.

Take a closer look at the lesson called Comparing Two Linear Relations lesson Overview. You can scroll down to page 7 of this document.

Lesson Overview Sample Slide 1 of 2.pptx

Lesson Overview Sample: Comparing Two Linear Relations

Each lesson overview identifies:

  • the specific expectation(s) that will be addressed in the lesson which may be longer than 75 minutes;
  • the learning focus which is helpful for creating learning goals and/or co-constructing success criteria;
  • blended learning activities and its OERB number; and
  • other resources.

Teacher Notes Sample: Comparing Two Linear Relations

1) Take a look at the Comparing Two Linear Relations Teacher Notes to get a sense of the information that it has to offer. Key features is a summary.

2) Keep these teacher notes handy as you explore the blended learning activity for Comparing Two Linear Relations. (Next part of this session.)

Exploring the Blended Learning Resources

Lesson Overview Sample Slide 2 of 2.pptx

Before Exploration:

Before using the blended learning activities, these are some factors you may wish to think about and address a head of time.

  • What type of device are you using?

Those using a desktop will have access to some pieces more easily than those using a mobile device. Those using a mobile device will need to go through Puffin Academy. Download now if needed.

  • Do you know your OERB username and password?

To determine your OERB username and password ask another teacher in your board or contact your TeLT Contact from your school board.

Blended Learning Activity Tour

Before you begin touring, read the instructions up to Key Features.

Watch the video to take a quick virtual tour of an activity.

Now, tour on your own.

  1. Log in to the OERB.
  2. Accept the terms and conditions.
  3. Click on search.
  4. Click on Simple Search.

Now, either

  • enter the ELO number which is ELO1466150 or
  • use the hyperlink in the lesson overview document.

If you're unsure of how to log in to the OERB, there are two resources on the Logging In to the OERB page to support your needs:

  • a video; and
  • a one page instruction sheet.

As you're touring:

  • try out some of the tasks including Gizmos, OERB activity and videos
  • make note of assessment opportunities in blended learning and record your ideas in this Assessment Opportunities Google Doc.

Watch the video that highlights:

Key Features of Blended Learning Activities

bl.pptx

You will notice in the lesson overviews that some of the features of the Blended Learning Units are highlighted. In this particular one – Explore, Investigation, Practice and Video are included. These are hyperlinked so that you can access them directly without going to the blended learning activity to retrieve them.

Gizmos:

As you did your tour of the blended learning activity, you may have explored the Cat and Mouse or the Distance Time Runner Gizmos. Gizmos are ministry licensed for grades 7 to 12. If you did not explore during the tour, take a moment to try them.

Post your thoughts on how these simulations support student thinking and develop mathematical understanding of concepts in the Gizmo Google Doc.

OERB: Explain My Point! (ELO1241270)

As you did your tour of the blended learning activity, you may have explored this OERB interactive learning object. If you did not, take a moment to try it.

If you are using a mobile device, you will need to do this activity through Puffin Academy. View Getting Started to see how.

What do you notice about this interactive learning object?

How was this interactive learning object (ilo) positioned within the blended learning activity?

Post your thoughts in the ilo Explain My Point! Google Doc.

We are now going to take a look at a second example of a lesson overview.

The Measurement Optimization Lesson Overviews include:

  • Maximizing Area for Rectangular Shapes; and
  • Minimizing Perimeter for Rectangular Shapes.
  • You will notice that under blended learning there are different resources being highlighted.
  • The Linear Graphing Tool in the first one also includes a video of how to use it.

Linear graphing tool Video

For Minimizing Perimeter for Rectangular Shapes, look at the list of Other Resources

TIPS4RM documents and Colour Tiles by mathies.ca are two of the resources listed.

Other Resources – sample 2 slide 1 of 1.pptx

TIPS4RM is usually referenced In the list of Other Resources. This resource is set up with a three part lesson structure including blackline masters.

Open the link to view Unit 2: Day 5: Greenhouse Commission

Colour Tiles by mathies.ca is available in a variety of formats including apps and desktop.

Let's Do Some Math

1) Solve the Greenhouse Commission problem using the colour tiles by mathies.ca.

2) Share your thinking using the annotation tool (pencil icon) within the colour tiles learning tool.

3) Capture an image of your work with your thinking and save as a picture.

4) Share your solution and thinking with others by importing your picture into the google slides.

In this session we have highlighted TIPS4Math and the blended learning activities.

Please share, on the google doc, your ideas on how you will use this resource within your role.
