Research on sustainable last-mile delivery is also about people: the customers who choose how to receive their parcels, the companies that plan the routes, and the cities that live with the traffic. Here we share the activities we use to bring GLOBE's research to the public, especially to young people.
We took part in the European Researchers' Night in Lisbon at the National Museum of Natural History. At our stand, children and families played a board game about delivering parcels in a small city. They had to decide which customers would pick up their parcel at a locker, which vehicles to use, and in which order to visit everyone.
The game is played on a city map with 18 customers, two parcel lockers and a depot. Some customers want their parcel at home. Others can collect it at a locker, walking or by car. Players have an electric van and a combustion van, each with a limited capacity.
We took part in Tecnico Innovation Summit. The Summit brings together R&D units, spin-offs, and industry partners to show how science becomes innovation with impact. In this context, we presented our research on greener last-mile delivery and discussed how optimization and decision-support models can support solutions with tangible societal and environmental impact at Instituto Superior Técnico.
