The Lake of Different Stories: Waga Pangtsho

Waga Pangtsho, perched atop Jarey Mountain, is a unique lake with no visible source or outlet, yet its water level remains constant year-round. It's about a five-hour uphill walk from Ladrong village. According to legend, the lake originated from Tokari village in Tsamang, under Mongar Dzongkhag. Despite being a Lha Tsho (Holy Lake), local people reportedly polluted it to drive it away, as the visits from powerful individuals imposed burdensome demands for free labor and meals on the community. Although the lake was believed to bless the village, the villagers felt compelled to rid themselves of it, leading to its departure.

The Tshomen, the deity of the lake, is said to have paused at Chang Chen Phu in Ganglapong before reaching Jarey. This area remains marshy, a reminder of the lake's presence. Three days prior to settling in Jarey, three geese were spotted near present-day Ngangel village, which translates to "resting of the geese." Upon arriving in Jarey, the deity sought shelter for the night but was turned away, forced to stay in a field. The next morning, as a token of gratitude, the deity left a milk churner for the landowner.

Nearly a decade after the lake's departure, three individuals from Tokari visited the lake site, only to perish upon returning home. The milk churner eventually came into the possession of the influential Jarey Zhelngo family.
