February 2019 at Barnes & Noble Rogers, Arkansas: After reading The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flournoy, we made our own paper quilt squares to share our stories.
Compassion Fayetteville hosted a Barnes & Noble Bookfair with the storytime. We received dozens of books and over $200 for the Books in Barbershops and Beauty Shops program of the Black Cultural Action Committee. The program donates diverse children's books to African American owned barbershops and beauty shops in our area.
February 2019 at BHS Roar: After discussing the importance of historically black churches in the civil rights movement and viewing the beautiful stained glass windows of the Clayborne Temple, a hub for the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers' Strike, we created our own "stained glass" with inspiring quotes from African American leaders. One student couldn't resist quoting Ayo from Black Panther.

Happy Black History Month! We look forward to sharing community events and lessons from our African American Perspectives series throughout the month.
We created Engaging Empathy for secondary literacy classrooms, but the lessons are easily modified for other content classes, museums, art classes, and community events. To the left, you'll see pictures and descriptions of some of our Black History Month events from 2019. Here's how we're sharing Engaging Empathy with the community for Black History Month 2020:
- Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 11:00 am: On behalf of Compassion Fayetteville's Black Cultural Action Committee, Julie will read Sulwe, then lead the readers in creating star-themed bookmarks with quotes from Sulwe:
"We need you just the way you are."
"Promise to celebrate the brightness in each other..."
"Together we make the world we know, strong and beautiful."
- Thursday, February 20. 2020 at 5:00 pm: Julie will be at Bentonville High School's after-school program, ROAR, sharing two beautiful examples of self-acceptance: Sulwe by Lupita Nyong'o and "I, Too" by Langston Hughes. Inspired by the meaning of Sulwe's name (star) and her path to learning to love herself as she is, students will create compliment boards for one another, matted on star scrapbook paper.
- Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 11:00 am: We will repeat our storytime at the Rogers Barnes & Noble.
We would love to see you at either Barnes & Noble storytime event! Most of the participants are preschool age, but all are welcome to attend.
We'll also be at the opening lecture for Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal… (Friday, February 7 at 7:00pm at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art ) and at events throughout the month.
