My personal theory of change is that to achieve excellent student leadership goals in a classroom, our pedagogical practices need to push students to look inwards and sense the pulse of why they want to do what they want to do. I think that interventions that are experiential in nature help students become more confident, empathetic, and articulate.
As I started out, I was introduced to what Leadership in Teaching (LIT) entails. LIT focuses on five pillars- Connect, Envision, Plan, Execute and Reflect. By prioritizing these five pillars, fellows work towards enhancing their leadership potential with a strong commitment to Self, to Others, and to India.
Here's what my current reality is with regards to the LIT Rubric:
On the Connect Pillar, I have achieved an Advanced level proficiency on C2 and C3. Through C2, I create safe spaces to listen to my people and immerse myself in their context. Through C3, I reflect on my biases and their impact on my relationships.
I have enabled safe spaces by creating structures in my culture document that prioritize students' voice. I have also focused on incorporating experiential learning through Project Chronicler so that students would feel more in sync with who they are as individuals.
On the Plan Pillar, I have achieved an Advanced level proficiency on P2 and P3. P2 has enabled me to design a culture that enables strong processes and outcomes for my students. P3 has helped me to design a variety of aligned, logically sequenced tasks to meet goals set.
Through the Envision Pillar, I often try to rethink and imagine what this space of intervention can mean for my stakeholders. I am cognizant of the leader I want to be for my students and the community at large, and I have achieved an Advanced level proficiency on the E3 strand.
Through the Execute Pillar, we enable the creation of spaces filled with joy, safety and collaboration. Through X1, I have aimed to create a culture of joy, collaboration and high performance. Through X3, I have facilitated actions that enabled my students to meet their outcomes. Through X4, I have checked for progress at key stages and provided feedback. On these three strands (X1, X3, X4), from the Execute Pillar, I am between Proficient and Advanced.
Through the LIT strands, I have been finding space to reflect on my emotions and figure out the impact that they have in the way that I function. I am now more attentive to my emotions, and as a result, I am able to make clear connections to the knowledge, skills and mindsets that I have developed. Prioritizing these strands have helped me Envision who I am called to be as a leader.
