Read 180 is a research-based blended learning reading intervention program designed to support struggling readers grades elementary through high school. There are three main components to a 45-90 minute Read 180 lesson, whole-group direct instruction, small-group rotations, and whole-group wrap up. The intervention starts with a 20 minutes whole class mini-lesson which engages the students and reinforces daily lessons. Students then split off into one of three centers (student application, small group, or independent reading). At the student application center, the students work independently on the Read 180 online program. This allows for differentiation, specialized, and explicit instruction in the areas where each individual student requires the most amount of support. At the small group center, the teacher guides the students through engaging with sequenced text and then incorporates a vocabulary and writing task. The third center is independent reading. At this center, students engage in choice content and get to apply the strategies that they have learned. At the end, the teacher brings the class together for a brief discussion to wrap up the intervention.
There are many strengths to the Read 180 program. First, the use of small-group rotations allows for differentiation, specialized, and explicit instruction in the areas where each individual student requires the most amount of support. The content is tailored to provide targeted learning to meet the needs of individual students. The Read 180 online program allows students to work at their own level, at their own pace. In addition, the program ensures that all students have the opportunity to work in a small group with the teacher in a homogeneous group. This small group time is student driven and reinforces necessary strategies to support the readers in their independent reading. The program allows teachers to maximize time spent with students in the classroom and minimize additional time spent lesson planning. The program provides all of the needed content for every lesson, provides teachers with ample additional resources, and allows the teacher to receive real-time data to drive the instructional lessons. Research has shown the Read 180 program is proven to have positive effects on comprehension and general literacy achievement (What Works Clearinghouse, 2016).
The WWC Intervention Report noted one the program has had “no discernible effects on alphabetics for adolescent readers” (What Works Clearinghouse, 2016). Thus, the program is better suited for students grades 4-12. In addition, the intervention program is dependent on access to technology. While one to one technology is not required, a small group of students will need access to technology for each center rotation. School implementing the program need to assure classrooms have access to technology for the intervention block.
