🤖 What It Is
Ozobot is a small, programmable robot designed for coding, robotics, and STEAM learning. Ozobot combines hands-on learning with digital coding to teach programming concepts in a fun, interactive way. You can use them screen free, on an ipad, or on a Chromebook. Â
💡 How It Works
Line Following (Screen-Free Mode):
Ozobot can follow lines drawn on paper with markers or printed on worksheets.
Students create paths and use color codes (sequences of colored markers) to give the robot commands like speed up, slow down, spin, or change direction.
Ozobot reads red, blue, green and black markers. There are code sheets for students to use when creating paths for Ozobots. Printable Coding Sheets
Digital Coding (Screen-Based Mode):
Using the Ozobot app or Ozobot Blockly, students can program the robot with block-based coding, similar to Scratch.
This allows for more complex commands, loops, conditionals, and interactive projects.
Sensors and Interactivity:
Ozobot has light sensors to detect color codes and proximity sensors for navigating paths.
It responds immediately to commands, allowing for hands-on trial-and-error learning.

Innovative Design (ID)Ozobots are built for the iterative design process, particularly through "Color Coding" (Action Snaps) and OzoBlockly.- ID1.a.e (Identify and Solve Problems): Students identify a problem (e.g., "The Ozobot needs to get through a forest without hitting obstacles") and propose a solution using a drawn path.
- ID1.c.d (Develop, Test, and Refine): Students use systematic testing to improve their code. If an Ozobot fails to read a color code due to line thickness or lighting, students analyze the failure and revise the "prototype" path.
- ID1.d.i (Demonstrate Resilience): At the Implementing level, students solve complex, open-ended problems, such as using OzoBlockly to program the Evo to navigate a multi-level maze with sensor-based logic, persisting through multiple debugging cycles.
- IA1.a.e (Investigate Emerging Technologies): Students identify the Ozobot as a tool and describe its purpose—using optical sensors to translate visual data (colors) into mechanical action.
- IA1.b.d (Customize Environment): Students select and adapt tools by choosing between screen-free coding (markers) and digital coding (OzoBlockly) depending on the complexity of the task they wish to achieve.
- IA3.b.e (Create Artifacts): Students use the robot to create a "simple artifact," such as a "dance" or a visual representation of a story’s plot, to communicate what they have learned.
- DC2.b.e (Impact of AI and Automation): Students identify the Ozobot as an everyday example of automation. They describe how its sensors allow it to "assist people" (or perform tasks) in simple, repeatable ways.
- DC1.a.e (Responsible Interactions): In shared labs, students recognize the human impact of digital interactions by practicing hardware safety and collaborative troubleshooting.
- GC1.b.d (Contribute Constructively): Students contribute and commit to team goals by determining roles (e.g., one student is the "Line Artist," another is the "Logic Checker").
- GC2.b.e (Investigate Solutions): Teams "work together to understand issues" (e.g., why the robot is spinning instead of turning) and recommend solutions through peer feedback.
- EC.1.a.e (Purpose of Communication): Students record or state a "main message" (e.g., "I want the robot to slow down because it is entering a school zone") and then translate that message into the correct color code.
- EC.3.b.d (Evaluate and Revise): Students analyze feedback from peers on whether their robot "story" was clear and propose specific code revisions to make the communication more effective.
