Accelerated Reader, also known as AR, is a reading program that encourages students to read independently at their own pace. AR also keeps track of the amount of words read, which encourages students to take quizzes to attempt becoming a memeber of the Top Reader's Club (2nd grade and up)!
First, students take a placement test that allows teachers to know which books are a good fit for each student to read indpendetly. Then, teachers set reading goals for students. Next, students take AR comprehension quiz. When students visit the library, they select books that are a good fit for them to help them meet their AR goals. Students are allowed to check out one book on their dot color and one book that is off their dot color. The books that are not on their dot color, aren't for AR testing. These books are for students to explore their love for reading, and can be used to log their minutes read instead.
