Course Description : This is a two-year course that will include an intensive review of Spanish Grammar and Culture with emphasis in reading comprehension and analysis. Although the aspects of language learning will be covered in the course (listening, speaking, reading and writing), students will be exposed to more literature, speaking and writing than in previous levels of Spanish study. Students enrolled in this course will prepare for the oral and written IB Examinations. Students will have an opportunity to receive college credit if they pass the IB examination. Spanish is to be spoken in class. Students are responsible for much of their own learning and must be able to work independently; monitoring their own progress and dedicating sufficient practice time to improve in weak areas. The practice is above and beyond the time spent completing daily classroom assignments and studying for exams.
Attendance
Students will be responsible for either reporting to our virtual class on Google Meet or checking in with Sra. Weber in some way using the recording of the class.
Be sure to check your email inbox and the Google Classroom stream on appropriate block class days for announcements, assignments, etc.
If a student is absent from the daily meeting, it is their responsibility to view the recorded lesson in Google Classroom.
Individual work
Most assignments will be completed individually. These should be turned in via Google Classroom or the appropriate platform (Pear Deck, Nearpod, Flipgrid, Edpuzzle, Quizlet, Quizizz, etc.).
If a student needs clarification or extra help with an assignment, they should email Sra. Weber and plan to attend the office hours that day or the next day in order to avoid turning in the assignment late.
Some students may be assigned a mandatory meeting during office hours. I will be sure to accommodate any student's personal circumstances when assigning a meeting.
Group work
Group work will still be important in a virtual environment. As a group member, students must communicate using Google Meet, chatting through Google Docs, or by personal device communication (text/phone).
Group members will be responsible for dividing work load when necessary.
Groups are also responsible for creating task lists and meeting deadlines.
Students may not delete other group members' work without permission.
Time Commitment
When possible, students should expect to work 45 minutes of synchronous (the same time as classmates and the teacher) class time every other day (block scheduling). Some assignments may require additional time outside of this to complete.
Assignment Dues Dates/Late Work/Make-Up Work
Most assignments will be due by the next Google Meet period or by the end of the week. However, there may be some long-term projects that will take longer. Due dates for these (and occasional reminders) will be provided by Sra. Weber.
Late work will have a penalty of 5 points per day that it is late. Example: Assignment was due today and you did not turn it in for 2 days then you would lose 10 points. A Day to A Day is two days. To only lose 5 points, you must turn it in the very next day (excluding the weekend).
Make-Up work due to excused absences must be turned in by the next official class day after you have returned to class. If you need to make-up a test or a quiz, you must make arrangements with Sra. Weber within one (1) week to set up a time to make up the assessment.
Discussion Boards
Questions and posts for discussion will appear on Google Classroom. Please be sure to thoughtfully respond with only school-appropriate content and language. Be aware: Even deleted text may viewed by Sra. Weber.
Grading and Rubrics
Grades will be divided into 4 categories:
25 % - quizzes
25 % - classwork
20% - participation
30% - tests/projects
Grades are no longer Pass/Fail.
Digital Citizenship
Responsible digital citizenship means taking part in online community life in a safe, ethical and respectful way. Good digital citizens behave respectfully, protect their reputations and privacy, watch their tone, and are skeptical of information. Please see our remote learning class expectations listed in the chart above.
Please note that all Google Meet sessions will be recorded - please speak and behave accordingly (as if you were in a classroom).
While it is not mandatory, I would prefer if your camera was on - I am better able to give feedback and gauge your understanding by seeing you. However, if you are uncomfortable doing so, or if privacy/safety concerns or circumstances do not allow you to turn your camera on, I understand. If that is the case, setting up your profile photo as a bitmoji, school photo or selfie would be appreciated.
Copy/pasting or plagiarizing work will not be accepted. As easy as it is to do, it is even easier for Sra. Weber to check for plagiarism: Google Classroom now has a tool to check automatically.
Mutual understanding and compassion
********Virtual learning is a challenge for all of us - teachers and students alike. We must always keep that in mind, and be understanding of each other. And because we will not be seeing each other in person, communication will the key. Please make sure your communicate any concerns or problems you may be having with Sra. Weber as soon as possible.
