This year, our Area Competition will be at Byron Nelson High School, State Competition will be in Galveston and National Competition will be in Atlanta, Georgia.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
This year, AVID is pleased to have almost 400 students! Their program has grown tremendously in the last few years! Mrs. Huckaby, Mrs. Merry, and Mrs. Scheffler are very excited to see what we will be able to accomplish this year as an AVID Family! The AVID seniors are already reaping the benefits of their hard work with acceptances to UTA, UNT, and others. The AVID students are not only active in the classroom, but in other areas on campus. Be on the lookout for our AVID kiddos as they push themselves to reach their goals!
Over the last week, AVID students have been learning about and practicing the Focused Note-Taking System using the Origami Crane as inspiration. Students learned how to fold a crane, as well as some interesting history behind the centuries-old Japanese tradition. To end their Origami Crane & FNT unit, students created a 1-pager to display their new-found knowledge.
The South Hills High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Jorge Alarcon, is weeks away from the biggest and most important performance of this semester. They will be performing at the Region 5 UIL Marching Contest in Mansfield, TX. Prior to that performance, the band will travel to Midlothian, TX and Celina, TX for their first ever marching contests.
Pictured here is head drum major Alicia Casas dismissing the marching band. The band has been working since July 18th to put their 2022 production, Midnight In Transylvania, on the field. A special thank you to all staff that have supported the band program this year.
The soothing sounds of stringed instruments can be heard in the B hall. During class, orchestra students have been learning new music for their first concert which is coming up on December 6th in the Small Auditorium. Orchestra has all region auditions coming up on October 15th at Grand Prairie High School. The students have already started practicing for the audition. All region Orchestra is a huge deal! Students from all over the region (Fort Worth, Arlington, Grand Prairie and Mansfield) will audition for the Orchestra. If students make the Orchestra, they will be invited to play a concert on January 21st at the Arlington ISD Center for Visual and Performance Arts.
