Our instructional and assessment programs are designed to challenge students of various learning levels while responding to their interests and needs. The hands-on learning experiences allow students to apply concepts, skills, and processes for real-world purposes.
Students are given the opportunity to participate in a variety of Enrichment Clubs that not only peak their interests but expand their horizons. Over the years clubs have included Lego Challenge, dance, theater, sewing, sign language, art & crafts, gardening and community service projects.
Students learn curriculum content to solve a problem or fulfill some important need. Students engage in short and long term projects which expand their knowledge base and their ability to solve problems. Through these projects, students are involved in tasks which become increasingly demanding and complex.
The Applied Learning approach to teaching and learning is based on the belief that learning, to be relevant, must apply to life and career situations. Students learn to become responsible for their own learning by learning to plan and organize their work, identify and manage resources needed to carry out the work and make efficient use of their time. It is based on the work of John Dewey and the Secretary’s Commision in Needed Skills (SCANS) report which identified workplace competencies and foundational skills for solid job performance.
Teacher and student conferences are scheduled after each assessment period to discuss growth and to set goals moving forward. All students keep their own data folder to not only track but also reflect on their growth throughout the year.
Parent and teacher conferences happen three times throughout the school year; at the end of the first nine-weeks the discussion revolves around goals for the year; the end of the third nine-weeks we review progress towards the goals; and at the end of the fourth nine-weeks, a portfolio presentation led by the student.
Students engage in all the required district and state assessments.

Portfolios are a living collection of work that reflects a student’s accomplishments, skills, experiences, and attributes from throughout the school year. It highlights and showcases samples of some of their best work, values, and achievements. Portfolios also provide students an opportunity to reflect on their learning and set goals for the future.
