Art inspires kids to excel in and out of the classroom. It helps students stay in school, increases motivation, improves attitudes and attendance, and improves academic performance. According to Americans for the Arts, a student involved in the arts is: 4x more likely to be recognized for academic achievement.
Island of Competence. Because Art uses all areas of the brain to problem solve and create, students who struggle in core content classes can excel in Art Class! When students experience competence they develop a more accurate and positive self-narrative. Students who experience competence also create a positive future picture of themselves. Art gives students a unique opportunity to students who struggle elsewhere to feel great succeeding in art class!

"Art is the academic subject that can best heal trauma. Wether students are suffering on an individual or collective level, the arts can provide students opportunities to over come pain and difficulties in their lives."
- Matt Christenson
"The arts can play a vital role in the education of children who have suffered trauma, are at risk, homeless, and/or incarcerated. Effective interventions involve children in their own healing so they can feel safe and empowered."
-Steele & Kuban
"Arts of all kinds provide students a sense of safety, introspection, and healing within the academic context. We must be mindful of the power of the arts to support and heal the suffering our students endure. If education gives students opportunities to grapple with and overcome their personal struggles, we are truly serving our students."
-Matt Christenson
"When something traumatic happens to a school or community, the response must be lead by the arts."
