Hello friends! Welcome to the new school year. I am Mrs. Olivares and I teach Gifted and Talented at Fort Worth ISD. I graduated from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas with a Bachelors's in Interdisciplinary Studies EC-6 and am currently in school to obtain my Master's in Leadership and Gifted Education. I am the proud mom of three boys ages 8, 12, and 20, as well as 8 fish, two freshwater Pom Pom Crabs, 8 Mohawk Snails, a colony of Skittle Shrimp, a 5ish-year-old Border Aussie named Rocky-Roo, a grumpy 13-year-old long-haired Chihuahua named Pootchie-Berto, and a sweet little Pug puppy named Puggy-Sue. When I am not busy running from church to golf practice, to baseball practice, and to school events, I like to read and be creative. In my house, we build tons of puzzles, play lots of strategy board games, draw, paint, sew, draft, and engineer (the sheer volume of Legos and crafting supplies we have in our house is obscene), and we creatively go where ever our imaginations take us! My household and classroom motto comes from the great Ms. Frizzle herself, "Take chances. Make mistakes. Get Messy"... and then clean up after yourself. This is going to be a great year! I cannot wait to meet you and create with you!
I chose a career in Gifted Education because I fully believe that GT and High Achieving student should be given a chance to be challenged and to thrive in school. Teachers are often tasked to lift the performance of their struggling students. While struggling students definitely deserve the careful attention of their teachers, many times this leaves our GT population sitting bored in the classroom. Boredom can lead to behavior issues, feelings of not quiet fitting in, a loss of investment in their own education, and possibly falling behind. In a GT program students will have the opportunity to study their passions and interests, as well as gain a solid foundation in the 21st Century Skills sets needed to survive and thrive in the real world. Additionally, a GT program provides those students the opportunity to be with like peers, as often times that opportunity is not always granted in the regular classroom. Gifted students who participate in robust GT programs have a much higher instance graduating college and/or trade schools in a field that meets their passion. Every student deserves to be met where they are, to be challenged, to grow academically, to have their social and emotional needs met, and to know their value as a unique and precious individual.
