I have been teaching at McLean Sixth for seven years and look forward every year to helping sixth graders learn new skills and concepts along with discovering new and fun ways to teach and learn! I live close to the school and love to ride my bike so you might see me rolling around on the trails and through the parks on one of my bikes.

Welcome to your Sixth-grade Science Class. This year you will explore many areas of Science including Geology, Biology, Chemistry and Space Science. You will find what we are learning this first six weeks in the Syllabus below. Please reach out with any questions or concerns!
All assignments and expectations will be posted in Google Classroom. Please join the Classroom by using the codes sent to parents' phone numbers via text during the first week of school, or email me to request the code be sent to you. The Lesson Plans below will tell you our the daily activities, along with when assignments are due and when we will have a quiz or test.
IMPORTANT:
FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL
This week is set aside for the purpose of learning how to use our Chromebooks to gather lessons and assignments, complete assignments and turn them in. We will also learn how to communication with our teachers. We will also cover:
“Getting to know you”, activities.
Classroom and virtual learning procedures.
Classroom and virtual learning respect agreements.
Community building and classroom/virtual learning culture.
(Note: the "TEKS" are what the Texas Education Agency mandates sixth grade Science students will learn)
SECOND THROUGH SIXTH WEEK OF SCHOOL:
Unit 1: The Foundations of Matter
The topics are not necessarily in order
Review of Lab Safety & Science Practices:
TEKS Covered:
6.1 A: demonstrate safe practices during laboratory and field investigations as outlined in Texas Education Agency-approved safety standards.
6.4 B: use preventative safety equipment, including chemical splash goggles, aprons, and gloves, and be prepared to use emergency safety equipment, including an eye/face wash, a fire blanket, and a fire extinguisher.
TOPICS covered:
Safety Rules and Procedures
The use of Safety Equipment.
Elements & Compounds:
TEKS covered:
6.5 A: know that an element is a pure substance represented by a chemical symbol and that a compound is a pure substance represented by a chemical formula.
Topics covered:
Characteristics that define an Element.
Characteristics that define a Compound.
In what ways are elements and compounds similar and different.
Physical Properties of Metals, Nonmetals, & Metalloids:
TEKS covered:
6.6 A: compare metals, nonmetals, and metalloids using physical properties such as luster, conductivity, or malleability.
Topics covered:
Physical properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
In what ways are physical properties used for the classification of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
The locations of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids on the Periodic Table of Elements.
Evidence of a Chemical Change:
TEKS covered:
6.5 C: identify the formation of a new substance by using the evidence of a possible chemical change such as production of a gas, change in temperature, production of a precipitate, or color change.
Topics covered:
In what ways do the properties of matter change when elements are chemically combined.
In what ways can we identify when a new substance has been formed.
Calculating Density:
TEKS covered:
6.6 B: calculate density to identify an unknown substance.
Topics covered:
How to calculate density.
How to use density to identify an unknown substance.
