All about Mrs. Moreno

I am Sophie Moreno and this is my eighth year as an Intervention Specialist with the district. This is my third year working at Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences located downtown at TCC Trinity River campus. I have a passion for working with students and families and believe that helping others is my calling. I received my bachelors degree in social work from Texas State University in San Marcos. I then attained my masters degree in social work from University of Texas at Arlington.

I grew up mostly in Arlington, TX and I currently reside there with my family. I am the proud mother of three active kiddos; Gracie (11), Vincent (7) and Josephine (4). We recently added to our family by adopting a basset hound/ lab mix. Her name is Sansa and we are so in love with her. My family loves going to the lake, spending time outdoors, hiking, biking and just being with our very large family. I am a fan of the Cubs and Bears thanks to my dad whose family settled in Chicago after migrating from Poland. I love the New Orleans Saints, because my mom's family lived in Metarie, LA and for my toddler years we lived in Baton Rouge. We cheer on the LSU tigers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Texas State Bobcats! The only basketball team I have ever enjoyed watching is the Dallas Mavericks. My husband made me more of a Texas Rangers fan and if they aren't playing my other teams I will cheer on the boys.

For self-care I like to practice yoga, cook, eat dark chocolate and drink coffee. I look forward to going back to the kickboxing gym and spending time with my senior parents when it is safe to do so.

I am here to meet you where you are and help navigate this new reality of living in midst of a pandemic. Just reach out or visit my virtual calming room. I love you and miss you all and can't wait to see you (or meet you) on campus.

Dealing with Stress & Trauma After a Year of COVID-19

As is obvious to all of us, COVID-19 has created an extremely intense burden on us as individuals and a society in many ways. One of the most significant burdens has been the individual and collective trauma we have lived through together. As the anniversary of the WHO declaring COVID-19 a pandemic (March 11, 2020) comes around we want to provide you, and those you work with, some tips on coping with stress/trauma1:

  • Take care of your body: exercise regularly if possible, get plenty of sleep, avoid excessive alcohol consumption.

  • Make time to unwind: read a book, watch a movie, meditate.

  • Continue to safely connect with others: talk your feelings out, share achievements and upsets.

We wish you, your family, and those you work with a Spring that is full of happiness, good health, and good memories. Thank you for working hard to keep your community safe by continuing to do your part to slow the spread of COVID-19.
