Keyboarding Resources

Setting Goals and Providing Background Knowledge

Before students begin typing instruction, they need to understand the positive benefits of developing this skill and set realistic goals for success.

As a typing teacher for over 14 years, I found providing them with the history behind the typewriter and a brief explanation of the modern keyboard layout answered many of their questions about why the quirky way the keys are laid out on the keyboard.

Each student learns at their own pace, and this is so true when learning how to touch type.  To provide a positive experience for all when learning these new skills, I found that instead of setting a set goal for the entire class that might not be obtainable for all, I used an activity called Meet it, Beat it, Double it to assist with goal setting. Please see my dedicated page here👈 to learn more about how to administer this activity and use it as a measurable tool through the early days of instruction.

Developing Healthy Habits

In addition, it was important to explain the importance of good posture while typing.  To provide this information in a fun and engaging format, I developed a digital breakout👈 called "Sitting Pretty" that includes a variety of digital resources that stress the habits that typists need to develop or change to stay safe and healthy while typing.  The key for digital breakout can be found here👈.
