Heart Safe School Designation!

Project ADAM Heart Safe School designation is attained by schools upon successful implementation of a quality sudden cardiac arrest program of awareness, training and effective emergency response drills to promote a Heart Safe environment for students, visitors and staff. One component of the program is to ensure that AED's are accessible throughout the campus and that staff, students,  and visitors are aware of the location of the AED's.

Medications

Parents please do not send unauthorized medications to school with your student. If a student must take medication during school hours, the student’s parent must provide the medication. All medication, whether prescription or nonprescription, must be kept in the nurse’s office and be administered by the nurse or another authorized district employee. A student may be authorized to possess his or her own medication because of asthma or a severe allergy as described below or as otherwise allowed by law.

In accordance with policy FFAC, authorized employees may administer:

• Prescription medication in the original, properly labeled container, provided by the parent

along with a written request.

Prescription medication from a properly labeled unit dosage container filled by a registered

nurse or another qualified district employee from the original, properly labeled container

provided by the parent along with a written request.

• Nonprescription medication in the original, properly labeled container, provided by the parent

along with a written request. Note: Insect repellant is considered a nonprescription

medication.

• Herbal medications, dietary supplements and other nutritional aids not approved as medication by the FDA may not be administered at school.

ALL medications administered at school or school functions require a physician signed FWISD permit.

Medications, Medical Equipment, &/or Medical Supplies on Field Trips

The only medications and specialized health care procedures that may be administered or performed during field trips are those that are absolutely necessary to enable the student to participate in this activity. The school Principal or designee shall inform the nurse four (4) days in advance when students are scheduled to go on field trips. The following provisions must be in place four (4) days in advance of the scheduled field trip:

 • Medication and specialized health care orders already on file at school will cover any field trips taken during the school day. Additional medication and specialized health care procedure orders that are not on file at the school must be obtained prior to each field trip. These are considered temporary orders and are subject to change during the school year.

• Parents must send the medication in the original properly labeled container with only the amount required for the field trip.

• Supplies and any necessary equipment required for specialized health care procedures must be provided by the parent (e.g., catheters, nebulizer treatment machines, etc.)
