All FWISD first grade students took the MAP Reading Fluency and MAP Reading assessment in January, 2021. Watch this brief video to learn about the assessment.
This video clip explains the 4 pre-reading skills examined to determine if a child was at risk for dyslexia.
Researchers Gough and Tunmer proposed the Simple View of Reading in 1986. Good readers must have adequate or good language comprehension and decoding skills. Persons with dyslexia typically have ADEQUATE or GOOD language comprehension skills and POOR decoding abilities.
First grade students that MET or EXCEEDED expectations on Map Fluency in Language Comprehension, but scored BELOW EXPECTATIONS in phonological processes, phonics and foundational reading skills were determined to be at risk for dyslexia.
Contact your child's teacher or school counselor to set up a meeting to discuss concerns and determine the best course of action for your child. This may be to continue reading intervention or to request a formal evaluation for dyslexia. The Dyslexia Services parent resources page provides a detailed review of this process.
