English III focuses on exploring American literature while building strong reading, writing, and communication skills. Students analyze texts, write essays, participate in discussions, and complete creative projects to prepare for college and real-world communication.
English III is valuable not only for reading and writing but also for developing critical thinking and communication skills. It teaches you how to see things from different points of view, solve problems creatively, and how to share your ideas confidently. These skills are important in everyday life, both as you enter your future careers and build relationships throughout your life.

Emphasis is placed on analytical writing and research projects. This course will also prepare you for college-level reading and writing through vocabulary development, grammar review, and analysis of various writing styles.
English IV will help you communicate clearly and think critically about the media you consume. You’ll get better at understanding tricky texts, sharing your ideas, and making strong arguments--all of which are useful skills in the workforce and everyday life. Whether you’re writing emails or just understanding different points of view, English IV will help you succeed and feel confident in the real world.

The 2025-26 school year marks my 1st year teaching at South Hills, but I have been involved with SHHS since 2014. I have a bachelor's degree in English from Texas State University (eat 'em up!) and I really enjoy getting creative in my teaching, trying new things and, more than anything, proving to my students that whatever I share with them will actually matter to their lives.
Here's to a great year! -- Ms. Smith
