Fort Worth ISD offers a comprehensive program for students with visual impairments. This program provides individualized instruction to students who are visually impaired which enable them to access the curriculum in the least restrictive environment. Orientation and mobility services may be provided to blind or visually impaired students by qualified personnel to enable those students to attain systematic orientation to and safe movement within their environments in school, home and community.
Services are provided as determined by the assessed needs and the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) committee. A certified teacher of students with visual impairments, and if determined, a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) provides:
Parent/Infant (0-3 year old) services are provided through a memorandum of understanding between FWISD and the Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECI) that provides home or center-based instruction.
consult services to the classroom teacher and/or the student
direct services to the student
The teacher of students with visual impairments, and if determined, COMS work closely with the child, his/her parent, and the classroom teacher to identify necessary modifications to support the child’s educational programming.
