2020-2021 Course Syllabus for CHEMISTRY
Instructors:
Irteza.Naqvi irteza.naqvi@fwisd.org
The curriculum for Chemistry allows students to experience abstract concepts in a concrete manner and also to engage in manipulating equipment /materials in order to acquire data through observations, examinations, exploring and testing of matter. The course will include hands-on learning, applications to everyday life, quantitative and qualitative problem solving and content development. The course requires 40% of instructional time to be devoted to lab experiences such as pre-laboratory, laboratory, and post-laboratory exercises and analysis.
Course Objectives:
The student will be able to:
Use scientific methods during field and laboratory investigations.
Describe the existence and properties of subatomic particles.
Describe the interrelationships among variables contained within a closed system.
Differentiate the properties and behavior of acids and bases.
Identify and evaluate variables involved in chemical reactions.
Conduct scientific research independently, with appropriate communication
Apply scientific skills to become an independent thinker and lifelong learner.
Areas of Study:
Laboratory equipment and Safety Chemical Names & Formulas, Bonding Properties of Matter Chemical Quantities, conservation of mass
Scientific Measurement & Problem Solving Chemical Equations
Atomic Structure Water & solubility, Solutions Electrons in Atoms Acids and Bases
Chemical Periodicity Gases
Nuclear Chemistry Energy Changes in Reactions
The nature of Chemistry requires the student to know certain basic facts that MUST be committed to memory. Mathematics is an integral part of this class. Problem solving strategies will be stressed through-out the year and this course also requires the student be able to solve problems WITH and WITHOUT a calculator.
Science TAKS Objectives:
The student will demonstrate:
An understanding of the nature of science
An understanding of the structures and properties of matter.
Textbooks:
Primary Textbook: Chemistry: Matter and Change. McGraw-Hill Education
Additional Materials:
Laptop (FWISD issued or personal)
Other sources as determined by the instructor.
Pogil activities.
Dana Center Activities.
Supplies:
3 Ring Binder. *A scientific calculator (recommended)
Lined Notebook paper/Two notebooks . * A laptop
Several Blue or black pens
#2 pencils & erasers
Colored pencils (optional)
GRADING POLICY
Grading Scale:

Class Participation is highly recommended.
Grading Periods: There are three six week periods per semester.
Semester grade: Your final grade will be calculated by all six week averages and semester exam.
Progress reports will be issued every three-weeks and report cards at the end of the six weeks.
Semester grade will be determined as follows
1st Six Weeks (28.5%) 2nd Six Weeks (28.5%) 3rd Six Weeks (28.5%) Semester Exam (14.5%)
ATTENDANCE:
State and District policy will be followed.
Projects and special assignments: if you know you are going to be absent on the day a project/assignment is due please plan to email or send the assignment by someone to the teacher prior to or on the due date of the project.
Late assignments will result in a reduction in grade.
Make-up exams and retesting:
Make-up exams due to an excused absence and retesting will be given after school or by appointment within one week of a return to school.(before School, or after school as determined by instructor.
Make up exams or retests will not be given during regular class time.
Tutoring
A schedule is posted in each science classroom. You may arrange tutoring by appointments as well.
Note: Email & FOCUS will be used for communication. Any other website, if used will be announced in classroom.
Please sign and detach and return to the instructor.
